Over at Salon, Joan Walsh is upset and worried about President “Deficit Hawk” Obama.
So while I’m not worried about President Palin, I remain worried about President Obama. I’m particularly concerned that his increasingly triangulating, anti-deficit administration will do the wrong thing, morally and politically, and move to the right, without understanding that some right-wing rage could be rechanneled by acknowledging its roots: That the economic system seems rigged for the have-a-lots v. the have-a-littles, and despite their promises, the Democrats haven’t done enough to change that.
Some thoughts for Joanie.
First, have you not noticed the $1.4 trillion deficit this year or that October was the highest monthly deficit in this nation’s history? Do you notice the crashing dollar and rising commodity prices?
Second, isn’t our economic system really skewed between the work-a-lot v. the work-a-little? All I’m saying here is that if somebody wants “a lot” then it is really up to them to achieve it, rather than pile than responsibility on others.
Finally, what do you mean the Democrats have done nothing for the have-a-littles? Look at the entitlement spending! We have the New Deal and Great Society in place that accomplished what you want, right? Don’t tell me those wealth transfer programs didn’t work as promised!
